In the Bahamas, families have traditionally been large, so most Bahamians enjoy networks of first family, extended family, cousins, and friends. When Deno Albury reopened his family-owned waterfront restaurant at 307 East Bay St, Nassau, he chose a theme of community. He hung my Bahamian wooden sloop photos on the walls, and brough in trophies from home won by Deno’s family sloop “Good News.” Deno created Sailor’s Choice -- a hangout for sailors and an informal yacht club.

After a three-year government imposed pause to protect Bahamians from the spread of Covid-19, it is Regatta Time again in Long Island, Bahamas. Long Island, Bahamas is not to be confused with Long Island, New York, as this island in the Bahamas has less than 2000 inhabitants, is 57 miles long, and is nowhere wider than four miles. It is legendary for its wooden boat builders and powerful racing sailors.

The UK Royals sampled the Crown Jewel of Bahamian sports when they had a chance to go sloop racing during their week-long tour to the region in March, as part of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubalee Year. Interestingly, it was the sailors that got the best pictures of their royal crew members up close and personal.

PLUCK'S LAST RIDE. This much loved Bahamian sailor was buried in Rolleville, Exuma, Bahamas today. These are the Family Islands, known as the friendliest in the Bahamas. Large families of cousins race against each other in wooden sailing sloops that have been in their families for generations. These families are so generous they have adopted me, making me one of Pluck's dozens of cousins. Today Pluck's cousins and shipmates, pulling the family sloop “Fugative” as a hearse, carried his coffin through the streets of Rolleville. In his memory, a Bahamian printer and graphic artist made "Pluck buttons" and "Pluck mugs" from my photo of Pluck doing what he loved, sailing “Fugative” fast!
